Our Mission and Vision

The Washington Harbor District Alliance (WHDA) is dedicated to revitalizing and preserving Downtown Washington, NC. Our mission is to recruit and support businesses in the Central Business District, fostering an inclusive, professional, commercial, cultural, and residential community on the water.

Our vision is to create a charming, pedestrian-friendly downtown where small businesses thrive economically, and the community flourishes. By promoting preservation and encouraging growth, WHDA ensures Washington remains a vibrant and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.

Driving Growth and Revitalization

As a non-profit organization, WHDA plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of downtown Washington. From collaborative projects like Festival Park and the Maritime Center to cohesive signage through the Wayfinding Project, we are committed to enhancing the Historic Downtown’s charm and accessibility.

All Main Street America™ Accredited programs meet a set of National Accreditation Standards of Performance as outlined by Main Street America.

Washington is a North Carolina Main Street community, designated by the N.C. Department of Commerce Main Street & Rural Planning Center.  The Washington Harbor District Alliance is charged with administering the program at the local level and building public-private partnerships to spur economic development that achieves measurable results such as investment, business growth, and job creation.
